I've been working on some artwork for my good friends, and awesome band, The Suppliers. This is the image that ran alongside their recent interview with BeatRoute Magazine, but also serves as kind of a teaser for what their album artwork may look like.

Not too long ago I created the cover art for A-Mac and Paul David's "Horizon EP" (above).

It found it's release yesterday, off Burner Records, these moombahton joints are sure to make your winter feel like summer, so make sure to cop the EP. Also available is A-Mac's promo mix for The Horizon EP, it's free so definitely download the mix below.

Earlier on the week the Horizon EP (and album art) was featured on blogosphere heavy weight Gotta Dance Dirty, who can much more eloquently describe the music at hand so give it a read, and follow the ETC!ETC! Horizon remix link.

In February's issue of Freq Magazine I contributed the above comic, which may become an ongoing thing. I tried to have it deal with relationships as the February issue of a magazine is also the Valentines issue of a magazine. I was asked to do a comic or illustration for the back so I decided to use that opportunity to try something a bit different for me. I wanted to try my hand at drawing some single panel comics and see if I could do some that are just straight black and white (New Yorker style). And I wanted to work with some gnarly animated characters within the panel, which I am going to try and push further in next month's panel.

It takes up the back inner page of the issue, so go grab one off newsstands or inside select BeatRoute Magazines.

If you pick up an issue of Freq, you can also give my review of the new Moka Only and Evil collaborative project "ZZBRA" a read. Check out one of their tracks below, "Green".

Here was my piece that displayed at Untitled Art Society's Satellite Gallery last week at their pin up show. My piece sold at the show, but a couple extras were printed as well. If anyone is interested in purchasing one you can contact me.

The show had a diverse body of work on display, and it was really great to see how all the artists tackled the idea of the "Pin Up".

At the end of last month I created this illustration for the January issue of FREQ magazine, which is out on stands now. It was originally created to be the cover, for the feature on Snowblower. Unfortunately advertisements got held up until it needed to be printed after Snowblower, so it didn't make sense as the feature anymore. You can still find this illustration inside I've been told, so go to your local news stand and pick up a copy.

FFWD VOL. 17 NO. 4

On December 29th the year end wrap up issue of Calgary's news & entertainment alt weekly, Fast Forward, was released. Since it was a bit of a different kind of issue for the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012 they wanted a bit of a different cover. They decided to go with a comic style cover, and I was lucky enough to be chosen to create it! They wanted something "self deprecating", and I was a bit worried that my idea may be too self deprecating when I sent it off, so I was really excited when they ended up giving it the go ahead.

You can consider this a special edition of Still Here and a return after the holiday break. It's been on my bucket list to do a FFWD cover, so I was happy to be able to cap off 2011 with my first cover on news stands. They'll be around until January 4th so go check out a copy if you get the chance.....and HAPPY 2012!

arkells "michigan left" music video

In October I was busy drawing for The Arkells' newest single and music video "Michigan Left", the title track from their sophmore album. I worked alongside talented music video directer (and friend) John "JP" Poliquin who you may remember I collaborated with earlier in the year on the Mother Mother music video.

For "Michigan Left" I contributed the illustrations and animation seen throughout the video, giving the animations that "scratched on film look". Last Friday it premiered on MTV and Much Music. I was really happy with the final result and the song is awesome so check it out:

I have been really hard at work all week on an animation project, leaving me very little time to make a new comic. Yesterday afternoon I completed all the animation that was needed of me, and I was able to quickly put together a new "Still Here" for today (as I have been posting them every Tuesday). Then yesterday the tragic news came that Kim Kardashian was getting a divorce (I had only recently discovered she was married through a recent WTF podcast).

I found all the news around it very bizarre and sort of funny, so after a day filled with Kim Kardashian themed tweets, I decided I was going to make a Kardashian themed comic. I put my completed comic to the side, and spent last night making a new one. It can be awful when any relationship ends, especially a marriage, even when the wedding costs 10 million dollars, generated you 18 million dollars, and was very possibly just orchestrated for publicity. After all, even sham marriages have people that depend on them, publicists, tabloids, the people that read tabloids, etc. So I thought I would look at Ms. Kardashian's latest tweet on her twitter feed, fearful that it may humanize her and I would scrap the whole thing completely. Luckily it was a comment celebrating the opening of her new store: "Kardashian Khaos has arrived!". Indeed.

In this months issue of FREQ I contributed the above illustration for an article on electronic music on CJSW. I also did a record review for the self titled debut of rap super group Random Axe.

I picked up my (free) copy of FREQ from Daily Globe News Shop and saw them at nearby clothing store The Gallery on 17th as well, but FREQ magazines are all over town, so go out and cop your issue with Skream and Benga on the cover.

Here is the collaboration diptych Sam and I exhibited in the September show "&Ampersand 3" at the Untitled Art Society Satellite Gallery. The illustration on the left is Sam's work while the right half is my own, they were flush with each other on the wall and mounted on foam core.

&Ampersand 3 was a great success, huge turn out! Big thanks to curator Vicky Chau for all of her hard work setting up the show, and everyone who came out and supported it.

arctic monkeys poster

Arctic Monkeys poster

Last week I created the above poster for the Grammy winning British alt-rock band, Arctic Monkeys. It was for their Winnipeg date during their 2011 Canadian Tour, but they also sold the poster at the Saskatoon and Calgary shows as well. I got hooked up with a ticket for the Calgary show on Thursday, and it was awesome! Bothe Arctic Monkeys, and opening act The Smith Westerns put on a great show.

My poster had a run of 150. 100 in the blue color way and 50 in the orange color way were printed. The band got some and I got a few as well. It was great to see how quickly it sold, even at the non-Winnipeg dates. There are a few that were held on to to sell at Heritage Posters and Music on 14th street as well if you're interested. Each one is individually signed and numbered. Alden Alfon and Kenzie Housego each made a poster as well, for the Calgary and Saskatoon dates respectively, that should also have a couple left at Heritage Posters and Music. Alden and Kenzie both did a wicked job of silk screening all of the posters as well!

allstar weekend music video

In September I was fortunate enough to work on a music video for Hollywood Records (home to fellow Disney artists such as Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, etc). The music video was for the group Allstar Weekend. The single is "Blame it on September", and was a lot of fun to be a part of. I was able to collaborate alongside my friend Kyle Ritchtsfield, who did the Post VFX, and the music video was directed by the talented Colin Minihan. I contributed the hand drawn animations.

Allstar Weekend calls it "by far their favorite to date" here, which is cool because some of their music videos have over 4 million views!

Sort of a tough one to decide what to draw, mostly when making the crucial decision of having the sex related whale be a sperm whale or a humpback whale (I went for hump). I received an email from Sketchoholic last week asking for permission to print a submission of mine that I drew over a year ago. It will be in the Sketchozine "Cutesies", Wanchana Intrasombat designed the above cover art. There will also be some features and interviews with some of the best illustrators in the business, like Eduardo Sá Carneiro (you can read his Cutesies interview here).

My "Lil 'Zilla" piece is in the top right corner of the right image.

The original piece I drew can be seen on an old Finishing Lines post here, or on page 79 of the book (just type in 79, where it says Page 1 here). Not sure when the book is set to be published.

& ampersand 3

Sam and I collaborated once again for the &ampersand Show (not the above image that's just the promo poster). The exhibt runs from September 6-10, and there will be a closing reception, so come on out and take in all the collaborative works.

Vicky Chau, &ampersand organizer and curator explains the show:

&ampersand is an art exhibition that celebrates collaborations between creatives, where each collaborator brings a different skill, practice and perspective. Collaborations are a unique experience where inspiration, motivation, and new perspectives can influence the works created. The beauty of each work comes from how new ideas emerge, as part of the collaborations, where it would not have happened alone. It is never a perfect process. As you work off each other, you start discovering your own strengths and weaknesses. Either working harmoniously or clashing ideas, by the end of it, you never know how it’s going to turn out. There are over 15 collaborative works and over 35 artists and designers involved in the show. This is the 3rd year of &ampersand, which has continued to inspire individuals to work together to create something new.

I had originally stated that it was pushed to the September issue, but it looks as though it will only remain an online article. You can read E-Z-Breezy's informative article here. Next month will have a whole new sex article which I am illustrating once again and Beatroute's resident sexpert, E-Z-Breezy will be writing (this one should be published). This past long weekend I clocked in a lot of time inside, staring at this wall. I was commissioned to create a mural for an IT room. I was really happy with the end result, and it felt good to be working at that large of scale again as it has been a little while. I think I may end up re-purposing the idea for a print.

SCORM is an acronym for Sharable Content Object Reference Model. I got a ton of creative control which was awesome, and everyone in the IT department seemed to love it, no word on HR's thoughts on the smoking gun yet.

This Friday, August 5th, there will be a show being held at the Resolution Art Gallery in Kensington. The show's theme is about being in your 20s, and there will be at least 20 artists showing I believe. I have one painting being displayed, which I created for the show.

This is the illustration of mine that was chosen to be printed in the expo "Dreams and Wishes" artbook this year.

Had a full weekend at the Calgary Entertainment Expo booth with Sam this past weekend! We both had a lot of fun, met a lot of great people, and were each exhausted by the end.

This was each of our first year with a booth at the expo as well as the first time offering up a large body of our personal artwork up for sale. I had set the personal goal of selling 10 prints a day, and without getting into exact numbers I was able to sell more than 30 prints on just Saturday alone. It felt tremendous to see how much expo goers were feeling my art, the artists that go to these events are tremendously talented, and for someone to choose a piece of mine to hang on their wall is the ultimate compliment. It's a great feeling when someone is standing at your booth for ten minutes struggling to decide which print to get and ends up walking away with multiple, or when a dad who bought a print rushes back for another because his family couldn't stop talking about it. One girl said she saw a print of mine on Saturday, and spent most of Sunday trying to find me again so that she could buy it.

I was able to learn a lot this year, and can't wait to be involved with the expo again in the future. Big, big thanks to everyone who came out and supported me at the expo or just had kind words to say, you help finance this art habit of mine. Also huge thanks to all the other artists who took the time out of incredibly busy days to say "What's up?" and look at my art. I wish I had had more time to talk to more artists for sure.

Well the day of the Calgary Expo has finally arrived, I'm looking forward to meeting some cool people, and seeing some terrific artwork. I will also have my eyes peeled for a Dr. Zoidberg figurine. Likewise if you want to avoid seeing me and Sam avoid booth number 708 or look out for this massive sign....

Just put the finishing touches on this piece Tuesday, and sent it off to the printers yesterday! This piece rounds my print total to a healthy number 10.

In other Calgary Expo news, one of my prints was selected to be published in this years Calgary Expo Artbook which I am really excited about! Part of me still thinks they may have made a mistake and I won't appear in it, but at any rate I will not be posting the final image that was reportedly selected until after the book has been released on the weekend. This year's artbook theme was "Dreams and Wishes" and fittingly supports the charity "Make a Wish Foundation". The artbook is a hard cover and is limited to 1000 numbered copies which will be $25 to pre-purchase and $30 at the show (The Expo Store is located at booth 815). There will also be an auction that some of the artists will be participating in. For more details and to check out the cover art, go here. Also check out Bri Raymond's blog here, an illustration of hers will also be featured in the artbook, and she will have a booth at the expo as well.

This print was based on a drawing I made a few years ago, I liked the idea of the girl accompanied by a gator with a diamond in it's mouth but wasn't 100% with the composition and execution. With that said I'm never 100% with anything I create, but this comes much closer. Available at this weekends comic expo! Act like you need to know!

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Zelda games, as a fan I decided to do my own twist on the classic character Link.

Set in a dystopian future where Ganon propaganda litters the streets. Only a graf artist with the heart of a revolutionary, Link, has the courage to rebel.

Tie Off with a Lie ink and digital

Played with some black ink mixed with some colored ink as well last night, although the color was primarily achieved digitally still. This piece is sort of Adam and Eve inspired obviously. The man is tying himself off with the snake, or are Eve and the snake just hallucinations? Or did this "Eve" drive him to an unhealthy addiction, and now he can't get her out of his head?

Listen to the fantastic Afghan Whigs song "Now You Know" below off the classic album "Gentlemen". My favorite part is when he says "Tell me is it the same my sweetness my everything", but the line "You bit into a rotten one now didn't you?" goes well with this piece I think.

After listening to the Frank Ocean album Nostalgia/Ultra a lot last week I was inspired to create this quick piece, after particularly liking the song "Swim Good". The type could use some work but I am liking the idea of the drowning man making the apostrophe and dotting the 'I', the cliff 'T', and the 'A' and 'W' which form the upside down heart. Hopefully when I have more time I will be able to polish it up, but for now it's just an idea that is on the back burner. Listen to "Swim Good" below.

Had an idea to add this skeleton to the girl in a black dress....so that's just what I did. After the jump check out a fan made video (despite the "official" in the title) of Kanye's "Devil in a New Dress". Rick Ross' lines are absent here just as they were in the Runaway DVD, maybe that's why he decided to go and cut his own video of his verse out on his own. That version after the jump as well.

This is the piece that I showed at the Black Valentine show on Saturday night. It began as a drawing I made in my sketchbook way back in mid September, and I have been meaning to do something with it. The Black Valentine show was the perfect opportunity, although I have been repeatedly told that many of my pieces would have been appropriate. Here is a picture of me and my piece at the show, thanks goes to my friend Jess who snapped the photo. Displayed beneath the piece is the accompanying poem I wrote.

mother mother music video!

Over the past while I was fortunate enough to be a part of the new Mother Mother music video! During January I was drawing a ton, working along with my buddy, and extremely talented music video director, John Poliquin (congrats to him on the 4 award nominations he recently received from the East Coast Music Awards). I created illustrations and animations which were in turn put into the music video by After Effects artist Ace Billet. It was one of the funnest projects I have gotten to be a part of, and I was able to have a bunch of creative input which was a big part of that. I never had any direct contact with the band, but from the notes I read they seemed to be fantastic to work with as well.

The song the video is for is called "The Stand" and will be on the new Mother Mother album "Eureka", set for release on March 15 2011, or you can purchase the song on iTunes now. "The Stand" is also streaming on their myspace. Keep your eyes peeled for the video to play on Much Music this month!

Here are some teaser screen shots of my drawings within the music video. I'll post the actual music video as soon as Last Gang Records throws it on youtube.

Last Thursday me and my friend TJ (check out his band String Bridges here) attended Tamara Beatty's CD release party for her newest album February Bloom (listen to some of her music here). It was a lot of fun with lots of great music, dancing and all around good vibes.

A little while ago Tamara had commissioned me to create a piece for her friends over at The Station Recording Co., seen above. I was able to meet them at her show as well when she gave them a framed copy of my illustration, which was pretty awesome.

Just a fairly quick drawing from my sketchbook, playing with ink. I did a quick rough of the girl with a colerase pencil, then used a calligraphy nib for the line work. I added values using an ink wash, as well as adding a bit of texture. I filled in the background with some markers.

Hopefully this piece speaks for itself but the idea behind it is that the Tin Man, heartbroken, has smashed the heart he received from the Wizard in what is a vain attempt to no longer feel the unbearable hurt he is tortured with inside.

I have been listening to The Afghan Whigs a lot recently, and while working on this piece I coincidentally came across a cover they did of The Wizard of Oz's "If I Only Had A Heart". It is a great reinterpretation and compliments this piece well, so make sure to take a listen after the jump.

I especially thought it was a nice touch when Greg Dulli changed the lyrics from "I'll be friends with the sparrows/and the boy who shoots the arrows" to "I'll be friends with the arrows/and the boy who shoots the sparrows"
