end of the line

It has been over a year since my last update!
I haven't updated since my place got flooded in 2013.

I've been working on a ton of exciting stuff since then, and think I've really grown as an artist as well. Album artwork for CJSW's 2013 Fund Drive, all the illustrations for the Calgary Underground Film Festival this year, a new Mother Mother video, the Sled Island poster show, more FFWD covers, a 7" cover for Scion Sessions, a poster for the Polaris Prize, to name a few of the highlights.

But this post is to let you know that if you're interested in keeping up to date with my illustrations/projects/other life stuff then head over to my instagram, as that's the spot that's being kept up to date. Add me @deepcuts on your phone or take a look on your computer here: http://instagram.com/deepcuts

and of course I'm constantly updating my site jaretts.com

Thanks!

notorious b.i.g bday

Yesterday was Notorious B.I.G's birthday, it would have been his 41st.
I drew up this portrait of Biggie with his Jesus piece. Crazy and tragic to think he was only 24 when he passed, younger than myself.

shirts

Silk screened some shirts last month, some white and black ones, above is the black.

heads will roll

I had this idea for a typography project, and then after I finished I thought to myself  "why don't I animate it too?".

Below is the song I was listening to when I came up with the idea (not the Yeah Yeah Yeahs one might think).

comic expo

Had a rad time at the comic expo this year! Always awesome to see people digging the work, and everyone had the nicest things to say about my drawings. See a picture of Sam and I slanging our work above, me signing a dude's nipple below, and a fantastic four comic someone commissioned me to draw Batman and Robin on (do I attract the oddballs?). Thanks so much to everyone who came out and showed support for this thing I love to do and continue to work at!

zeroh- coves and caves music video

I had the chance to work with incredible L.A. based music video director David M. Helman, as well as one of the best music video animators, Bristol based RUFF MERCY, plus cinematographer Trevor Wineman.

David and Ruff have been killing it for a while now with video's like last year's There He Go from Schoolboy Q and their Blu x Flying Lotus video DOINNOTHIN' FT. UGOD.

The music video I worked on is for LA rapper Zeroh's new single Coves and Caves. I created some animations which flicker on to the screen. It premiered yesterday on FRSH SLCTS. Give it a watch and listen below.

fairy tale friday installment #11: the girl without hands

We have almost come to the end of the Fairy Tale series I have been making for FFWD, only one more after this!

This week's is The Girl Without Hands, a Grimm Brothers Fairy Tale I wasn't familiar with until someone suggested I read it. It's one of the craziest fairy tales, definitely give it a read. In the fairy tale this miller chops off his daughters hands in hopes of protecting her from the devil (which he owes him).

In my illustration I have portrayed the devil as a shadow puppet being cast by the dismembered hands, the devil is looking down upon the mill. The tattoos on the hands symbolize elements from the story, like the king and angel. This is one of my favorite fairy tales I've done during this series I think, it turned out well in print too, so pick up a copy of  FFWD this week.

jenny t-shirt!

Calgary band Jenny has been tearing it up for a minute now, so I was stoked when Sean Hamilton contacted me about doing a shirt for them.

Take a look at the awesome Malissa Dunphy modeling one of the freshly printed shirts above, as well as Sean himself sporting the new merch below. Make sure you come down to the Palimino this Friday to be a part of Jenny's album release from Sudden Death Records! It's going to be fun!
More info on the album release here.
